Travel Tips to Japan

Whether you’re drawn to the serene temples of Kyoto, the bustling streets of Tokyo or the tranquil landscapes of Hokkaido, Japan offers a unique experience for tourists all over the world. Navigating this fascinating country requires a blend of preparation, cultural sensitivity, and basic Japanese communication skills. Here are essential tips and useful phrases to ensure a smooth and enjoyable journey through Japan:

1. Respect local customs and etiquette

Japan places a strong emphasis on etiquette and respect for others. When greeting others, it is common to bow your head slightly as a sign of respect for the other party. Be mindful of removing shoes when entering locals’ homes and certain traditional accommodations (like 旅館 ryokan). Lastly, do be mindful of your noise levels in public spaces.

Some useful phrases:

  • こんいちは konnichiwa (Hello)
  • お願いします onegaishimasu (Please) This is often used when making a request, to express gratitude to the person helping you.
